The global average temperature trend: What do you think will happen over the next ten years?
Although the data shows a trend of rising temperatures, the trend itself does not predict future temperatures. The rising temperatures are a symptom of radiative imbalance. If the radiative imbalance ended for any reason, so would the trend of rising temperature after some lag time due to the thermal inertia (heat capacity) of the earth system. However, since greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere continue to rise, the radiative forcing will continue to increase and so will the average global temperature.
